The plight of the mobile D.J.

Your party starts at 8 Saturday night, yet we’re preparing for it days in advance, tracking down that one song from that one hit wonder that no one has ever heard of because it expresses exactly how you feel about the upcoming occasion.  You hand us your list of songs that we would’ve probably played anyway, and you want them played in a specific order blended in a certain way. In essence, you want us to be an expensive jukebox of sorts, playing exactly what you want and how you want it. It’s almost as if I have a PLAY button on my forehead. They have iPods for that, ya know.

Latinos less likely to “Shoot Up” this season

Every year, around this time, we look forward to and begin to prepare ourselves for the holiday season.  We put a lot of emphasis on the fun and festivities of it all but sometimes overlook preparing ourselves for a season that is less likely to see Latinos “shoot up”…with the flu shot.  Our attention during this year’s flu season is extremely important despite whether or not you believe the flu shot is beneficial for you.  It is important for us as a Latino community to try and make educated decisions.  So pay attention because I’m about to school you on National Influenza Vaccination Week.

National Feed the Homeless Day- December 11th

When we think about the holidays, the first thing that comes to mind is family. Spending time with them and catching up again, because you know they have some new stories since Thanksgiving. To sit around a table filled with your favorite foods, listening to your favorite holiday music, right before you get to open up your gifts. This year you were hoping for that new gadget thing, the one with all the funny buttons that’s suppose to be a phone but you can’t figure out where the talk button is.

Las Posadas

Las Posadas is a religious celebration of Christmas that originated in Spain but is now mainly celebrated in Mexico and in Mexican areas of the United States. Traditionally, it is a 9 day event that runs every night from December 16th to the 24th. The word posada is Spanish for lodging. Las Posadas symbolizes the trials which Mary and Joseph endured before finding a place to stay where Jesus could be born.

A step closer to equality

The Illinios State House and Senate made history last week by passing the Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act, SB 1716. The bill will allow for Civil Unions in the state Illinois making Illinois the 12th U.S. state or district to pass Civil Union or gay marriage legislation.  The bill will now go on to be signed by the Governor Pat Quinn who has showed much support for it and has said he will sign it.  It is expected that Governor Quinn will sign the legislation into law early next year, and it will become effective next summer.
