Tax Refund Tips: Have a little fun AND plan for your future

It’s tax time, and if you’re one of the lucky ones you’ll be receiving a refund. For many, it’s like winning the lottery and the winnings are being spent in their heads before the money’s in the bank. Some intentions are good, such as paying off a bill, but often, the money is spent without much thought and you end up feeling even more financially insecure than before you received it.

It doesn’t have to be this way. If you plan wisely, you can help to build your future AND still have a little fun with your earnings.

How to question your way to a successful life

2012: Tú, only better

How do you define success? Chances are that your definition isn’t the same as mine or even the same as your best friend’s. How you define success is as individual as you are and it creates your map. Once you know where you want to go, you can map your route

But defining your destination and mapping it out are only the first steps. Life is not so simple that we can’t expect twist, turns, and bumps in the road. Those twist and turns mean that we must review the path each day to ensure that we’re on the right track. We can do this by asking ourselves some important questions each day.

TGIV! (Thank God It’s Viernes) [video]

This week has been an especially busy for the Being Latino team. We’re all busy working to bring you great things in 2012: A brand new website, cutting-edge video productions, social and networking events, and we’re even stepping into the Latino art scene. It’s no wonder that we’re all breathing a sigh of relief and saying, “TGIV!”

But what’s Friday without a little music? Join us in celebrating Friday’s arrival with some of the team’s Friday-themed favorites.

This one is made for chair-dancing…

But if you prefer something a little more mello…

And the favorite of some of our team (we’re shaking our heads too, play at your own risk)…

Happy Viernes, from the Being Latino team!

Teenagers and birth control: “I can’t get pregnant my first time”

Just earlier this week, staff writer Eric Cortes shared a few tips for parents in his article, Talk to your kids about sex. He stated that while there was a decline in teen pregnancy, it was still important for parents to have the conversation with their children. Aside from ensuring that kids have the facts, it’s also another way to connect with them in a meaningful way.

Your relationship status and your health: Marriage or cohabitation

Studies have shown that married people are happier than single people. Some married people I know would beg to differ, but if it’s generally true, is it really about being married or simply about being in a relationship?

A study published in the February issue of the Journal of Marriage and Family found that being in a romantic relationship, regardless of status, has benefits over being single.

Don’t fight the power, become it

2012: Tú, only better

In a down economy many people feel helpless. It’s easy to feel that way. Your co-workers are being laid off, and you keep your fingers crossed that you’re not next. You’re left feeling that something is better than nothing, even if that something is making you miserable and you know, that if things were different, you could do better.

Change your diet, save your skin

2012: Tú, only better

Winter can do some serious damage to your skin. Dry, itchy skin can be a problem even for the person with usually oily skin. Though more focus has been on what you put on your skin than what you put in your body, and supposedly things like eating chocolate don’t have the effects we imagined, there are foods that can help keep us looking our best.

Jesus and religion: Are they one and the same? (video)

Religion. The word is supposed to help us conjure up images of goodness. Good people who do good in the world. But religion is much more complicated than just a simple definition of being good and doing good. It’s often the cause of wars, and used to judge others who don’t believe as we do.

All of this begs many questions: Can you be a Christian without making attending Sunday service a part of your regular routine? Can loving Jesus and choosing or choosing not to be religious be mutually exclusive? Jefferson Bethke masterly explores these questions and more in his spoken word poem, Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus.
