The brilliant Julia Alvarez

by Charlie Vázquez

In the Time of the Butterflies is brilliant book, as those of you who’ve read it already know. For those of you who haven’t, we’ll be giving away two copies—so keep reading. This book tells the stories of the courageous Mirabal sisters, during the despotic rule of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic during the middle of the twentieth century. It was even made into a movie; stirring history, feminism, culture, politics and emotions into a textual cauldron that is as gorgeous as it is riveting.

On March 21, at 7:00pm EST, Julia Alvarez will be interviewed about her beloved classic by critically acclaimed author Edwidge Danticat. While this event will take place at Books in Books in Miami, the event will be webcast live on the Algonquin Book Club site: www.algonquinbookclub.com. People will tune in from all around the world, and while viewing the live interview, they’ll be able to chat with others who are tuning in to the same webcast.

So the first two readers to comment to this post below with the four names of the Mirabal sisters will win a copy each, courtesy of Being Latino Online Magazine. Make sure you get the names right! And please include your email address in your comment…otherwise how will we get the book to you?

¡WEPA!
