They changed your diapers, who will change theirs?

When we’re young, we see our parents as gods. Short of sporting a cape and go-go boots, they’re our heroes. As we get older, we begin to see their flaws and suddenly, the realization of their humanity makes us vulnerable.  Those who have lost their parents often feel orphaned. For those of us with aging and/or ill parents, a whole new awareness takes form and we ask ourselves: What am I going to do?

Conception, cost, and culture

How much is having a child worth to you? That’s what crossed my mind when I read an NPR article about a couple who spent $30,000 in total trying to conceive. They took out a second mortgage on their home, took out another loan, sold their motorcycle, and even thought of selling their house – all in an effort to become parents. Is it worth it to spend all your savings, including money you know you don’t have, just to have a baby?

Surviving verbal abuse

His fat sausage fingers jabbed at my face, emphasizing insults in between flecks of spittle. Fear and shame intermingled with a bubbling, rising sense of rebellion, and I had to stop myself from taking a snapping bite. To do so would have incited a barrage of belittling, and I was simply too exhausted. I was also seven years old.
