Around 3,000 Latino Catholics are expected to celebrate in the annual observance of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. There will be a midnight procession, singing, a Mass, traditional foods of Mexico and a gathering in the parish hall of St. Bernard of Clairvaux. The Event will take place Saturday in Riverdale park in Prince County, Maryland.
The Lady of Guadalupe is very important to Mexican Catholics. Miguel Hidalgo in the Mexican war of independence and Emiliano Zapata during the Mexican revolution all carried Flags with the image of the Saint.
On December 9th, 1531, Juan Diego saw a vision of a girl surrounded by light in the hill of Tepeyac. The girl asked Juan Diego to build a church in her honor in the very same site. Juan recognized the voice as the Virgin Mary. Juan told his story to the Bishop Fray Juan De Zumarraga who asked Juan to return to the girl and ask for proof of her identity. The Virgin told Juan to gather some flowers as he did from the top of Tepeyac hill where no flowers bloomed during winter. The Virgin then arranged the Castilian roses on his tilma. When Juan showed the Bishop the arranged roses the Señora de Guadalupe appeared on the tilma.
